Self-propelled wheelchairs are designed for individuals who have the ability to move the wheelchair themselves. They feature large rear wheels with hand rims, allowing the user to propel themselves forward by gripping and pushing the hand rims.

To steer a self-propelled wheelchair, the user can manipulate the direction by applying different amounts of force to each hand rim. For example, pushing on the right-hand rim will turn the wheelchair to the right, while pushing on the left-hand rim will turn it to the left.
