The backlight does the interpreting for you. Green covers 36.8°C to 37.2°C, orange runs from 37.2°C to 37.7°C, and red appears from 38.3°C upwards, with a separate flag on any reading at or above 38.0°C.

That matters most at night or when checking a child who is already unsettled. You get the colour and the number together, without needing to hold the unit up to a light or work out where the reading sits on a scale.

Two modes are built in. Body mode reads from 28.0°C to 42.9°C for forehead measurements. Surface mode extends to 50.0°C, which covers a room, a baby bottle or bath water.

Readings display to 0.1°C and the unit switches between Celsius and Fahrenheit. At 135 x 36 x 40 mm and around 65 g without batteries, it sits easily in one hand and stores in a drawer or a bag.
